With more than 30 experience in practicing all aspects of gastroenterology, Dr. Carter practiced in LaGrange, GA, before relocating his practice to Highlands in the spring of 2008. He earned his undergraduate degree from the University of Virginia at Charlottesville, VA, and his medical degree from the Medical College of Virginia in Richmond, VA, where he also underwent his intership and residency in internal medicine, and subsequently his fellowship in gastroenterology.

From 1976-1977 he was an instructor in the G.I. Division of the Department of Medicine at the Medical College of Virginia, before joining the staff of the Greenbrier Clinic in White Sulphur Springs, W.V., where he practiced until 1984. He then relocated to LaGrange, where he has spent the bulk of his career in private practice. During that time he served 11 years as chief of gastroenterology at West Georgia Medical Center.

Dr. Carter is certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine in both internal medicine and the subspecialty of gastroenterology. He is a Fellow of the American College of Physicians and is a member of the American Gastroenterology Association. He is licensed in Georgia, Virginia, West Virginia, Alabama, and North Carolina.
