Dr. Heller earned his medical degree from Albany Medical College in Albany NY, before participating in a categorical internship at the University of South Florida until 1978. He completed his fellowship in Hematology and Developmental Therapeutics at M.D. Anderson Hospital & Tumor Institute in Houston, TX, and a fellowship in Hematology at the University of Texas Medical School’s Herman Hospital. He completed his fellowhship in oncology at the University of Minnesota’s Masonic Cancer Center in Minneapolis, MN.

Dr. Heller is a clinical assistant professor of the hematology/oncology program in Winston-Salem, NC, at Wake Forest University’s Comprehensive Cancer Center in addition to practicing in Clyde, NC. He is a member of the medical staffs at Highlands-Cashiers Hospital, Haywood Regional Medical Center, Angel Medical Center, Murphy Medical Center, Mission/St Joseph's Hospital and Swain County Hospital.

He is a Diplomate of the American Board of Internal Medicine and its subspecialty boards in both Hematology and Medical Oncology. He is a member of the American College of Physicians, the American Society of Clinical Oncology, the American Society of Hematology and numerous state and regional professional organizations.
