Herbert Plauché was born and raised in
Morganza, Louisiana, a small town some 45 miles northwest of Baton
Rouge, on the banks of the Mississippi. “I had a sort of Huckleberry
Finn childhood,” said Plauché. “Swimming in the Mississippi was a
favorite pastime of mine.” In those early years, Dr. Plauché was torn
between wanting to be either a Naval aviator or a physician; however,
he was greatly influenced in his final decision by his grandfather, a
Family Practice physician, who ran a clinic in Morganza. By the age of
8, Herbert Plauché decided to follow a career in medicine. Years
later, in 1963, he earned his MD from the Louisiana State University
School of Medicine, New Orleans and became the 6th
generation of Plauché’s to become a physician. After
performing his
internship in general medicine at the Confederate Memorial Medical
Center in Shreveport, LA, Dr. Plauché then completed a combined
four-year residency in surgery and orthopedic surgery at Confederate
Memorial Medical Center before going into private practice in the
Baton Rouge area. In 1971, he and an associate founded Orthopedic and
Sports Medicine Center which grew to become the largest private
orthopedic
practice in Baton Rouge.
During his more than 30 years in
private practice, Dr. Plauché and his family liked to spend their
summer vacations in Highlands; hiking, camping, kayaking and just
relaxing. “We fell in love with the mountains and the cooler weather
was a break from the heat of Baton Rouge,” said Plauché. “I always
thought that it would be a great place to retire.” In 1998, Dr.
Plauché was offered a position with Highlands-Cashiers Hospital (HCH),
as its Orthopedic Surgeon, a specialty that the hospital had never
previously offered.
In the 12 years since that time, Dr. Plauché and his team have built
an outstanding reputation and now currently average 100 surgical cases
per year. “In my experience, Highlands-Cashiers is the only hospital
where there is a real sense of unity between the medical and
administrative departments,” said Plauché. “The staff is dedicated,
professional and friendly and the patient’s welfare always comes
first. Add to that some of the finest and most up to date medical
equipment available at any hospital in the South, and you have a
community hospital second to none.”
In his free time,
Dr. Plauché likes to hike in North Carolina and the Grand Tetons of
Wyoming. He is also an avid hunter of wild turkeys and loves to cook
Cajun food.
