A native of Texas, Scott baker grew up hearing stories of his grandfather, a well known and respected country doctor, who cared for his patients “cradle to grave”. During his college years at Baylor University, Scott worked as an emergency medical technician and paramedic, so when he began medical school, his goal was fixed upon a career in emergency medicine and surgery. “But God had other plans for my life,” said Baker, and following in his grandfather’s footsteps, he became a family physician.

In April, 1996, fulfilling their desire to live in the mountains of North Carolina, Dr. Baker and his family moved to Highlands where he opened his first medical practice at Highlands-Cashiers Hospital. “Family medicine has afforded me a great variety of challenges as a physician,” said Baker, “and it allows me the opportunity to develop life-long relationships with my patients.”

Carrying on the ideals of his grandfather, Baker takes time with his patients to listen to their concerns and to explain any diagnoses or treatment recommendations he makes. While his manner reflects that of the county physician, he is quick to utilize the facilities found at Highlands-Cashiers Hospital, which he believes to be unique in having state-of-the-art equipment, usually found in much larger hospitals.

Dr. Baker and his wife, Rebecca (Becky) have two children, Forrest, sixteen, and Bailey, soon to be twelve. He is a member of the local Methodist church, where he and his daughter sing in the choir. In his free time, Dr. Baker enjoys spending time outdoors, playing Bluegrass on his fiddle, cooking and most importantly, just being a dad.
