Richard Carter was raised in a
small Virginia town, 26 miles to the south of Lynchburg, called
Altavista. His father owned a construction company in Altavista and
for a time, Carter considered joining the family business. However, he
was greatly influenced by the example set by the town’s only Family
Practice physician, so much so, that after high school Carter decided
to follow a career in medicine. In 1972 after graduating Phi Beta
Kappa with his MD, Dr. Carter first served his Internship in Internal
Medicine followed by his Residency in Gastroenterology. In 1975 while
teaching at the Medical College of Virginia, Dr. Carter was a
contributor to a research project involving Crohn’s Disease. The
team’s research and findings, on the use of Somatostatin in the
treatment of Crohn’s Disease, were subsequently published in 1978.
Dr Carter spent the next 20 years
in private practice. During this time he and his family visited
Highlands, finding it a great place to relax, fish and just enjoy the
mountains. In 2008 he was offered a position as Gastroenterologist
with Highlands-Cashiers Hospital (HCH), a specialty that the hospital
had not offered for several years. Since 2008 Dr. Carter has made a
great contribution to the hospital’s Gastrointestinal (GI)
department’s expansion. “At HCH we have state-of-the-art equipment
such as Narrow Band Imaging Scopes and High-Definition monitors,” said
Carter. “This better tells us what biopsy we should take and helps us
to make the colon screening process more accurate and detailed. The
benefit to our patients is that they have access to equipment
generally not found at many of the region’s larger hospitals.”
In his free time Dr. Carter likes fly fishing, quail hunting, ocean
sailing and hiking the mountain trails of Western North Carolina.
