From an early age, Dr. Robert Buchanan had a fascination with how things worked and, using this natural curiosity, would disassemble and reassemble complex items. Inspired by his physician uncle, Dr. Buchanan made the decision to pursue medicine as his career. Utilizing his natural dexterity skills, the now Doctor Buchanan, found his niche in the complexity and broad diversity of Plastic Surgery. He was initially drawn to the then new field of micro vascular surgery and free tissue transfer; being the first St. Louis surgeon to successfully replant a finger, and on the team to do the world’s first successful vascularized whole joint transfer (in a child with a severe hand crush injury). Soon after, he successfully replanted hands, achieving total function and did the first known replant of a traumatically amputated nose.

“I’ve always loved anatomy and I’ve always been enthralled with figuring things out. For me plastic surgery requires intimate knowledge of anatomy combined with the ability to find the best solution to a particular problem,” said Buchanan.  “In plastic surgery, there are usually several different approaches to any one problem. You have to determine which is going to work best in a particular situation.” He was among the first surgeons in the US doing Liposuction, since it provided superior results with minimal incision. He has subsequently continued this innovation to improve results, increase longevity of results, reduce scars and speed recovery in other cosmetic procedures, particularly those of the face, eyes and breasts. He has, for instance, totally changed his facelift method to a new technique that provides superior, more natural results, shorter scars, and faster recovery. He also modified his eyelift for better, more long lasting results with fewer risks. He does his browlifts through small incisions using an endoscope. Many newer procedures do not even require surgery.

In 1999, Dr. Buchanan and his wife relocated to Highlands and, in doing so, brought a wealth of skill and experience to the community. “Highlands-Cashiers Hospital has worked with us to provide an up-to-date and safe facility for what we do. It can also provide excellent post-op care for those choosing to use it, something hard to find in many locations,” says Dr. Buchanan. “From this facility we are providing constantly improving procedures, which translates to less invasive surgery and great results for our patients.”

In his free time, Dr. Buchanan enjoys his grandchildren, hiking, biking, photography and playing Bridge with his wife.
